It is clear the HM administration is psychologically, morally, and legally disinclined to "do the right thing." Penn State University refused to do the right thing for fifteen years until it was hit with a mountain of evidence. The Board of Trustees has only recently been filled with reactionary "scandal deniers" who want to wipe the University clean of any responsibility--and Gov. Corbett is suing to remove NCAA fines. So much much for conscience and leaning from experience. Penn has a "football cult," and HM has an "HM is the greatest prep-school in the USA" cult. You cannot change cult thinking. You can only fight it head on with threats and pressure. Get more creative about what you can do to pressure HM into "doing the right thing."

I am certain that Dr. Kelly is also strongly opposed to child malnutrition. This is commendable.

It seems that there are assailants who are still alive and administrators involved in the cover-up who still work for the school. And the school has not apologized.

The Gladwell quote is not very helpful. Institutions tend to close ranks and cover up no matter what the issue is. It is not easy for an abuser to "get away with it" without help--either implicit or explicit. The refusal of the Horace Mann Board of Trustees to apologize is a classic example of institutional group-thinking. The administration of Penn State University "got away with it" for fifteen years. They are making ammends now only because they were forced to. The survivors of Horace Mann abuse should look upon their task as legal and political warfare.

This is all so, so awful.
My thoughts go out to all the Horace Mann survivors.

I...
I have an overpowering desire to read this "magnum opus" of his. Would it be absolutely impossible to find a copy?

This is my first time discussing this out loud. Im a male student that was in a sexual relationship with a female teacher from my sophomore year through graduation in '96 at HM. I have ruined my life by destroying all that I love, abusing alcohol and drugs, and a failed suicide attempt 4 yrs ago after a failed marriage. I have lost good friends, and destroyed relatinships. ,I don't know what else to say right now. I had a lot going for me at HM.... Athletic scholarship to college, only to drop out and start my eternal downward spiral. Forever I told myself that "it just happened" and "I'm ok". I guess I'm not. I had a great group of friends that I neglected and abandoned for this teacher. I had a best friend that I embarrassed and miss every day. I'm sorry to you all

I am not connected to Horace Mann school at all, but just read the NYer article and wanted to send care and support to all those survivors. Having experienced only cruleness of words and behaviour from mentors/teachers, I cannot being to imagine the hurt this man's actions have caused and continue to cause. May each survivor find healing, peace, and deep residing love within themselves.
